Cigar: Chinchalero Novillo (7/10)

Chinchalero is a Nicaraguan cigar manufacturer, who have been making hand-rolled cigars for a while now. We reviewed a Chinchalero Chico a long while back, it scored a 6/10: http://cigarsandpipes.blogspot.com/2009/01/chinchalero-chicos.html. The mas gordito brother of the Chico is the Novillo. It's a fat 66 gauge, 10cm long beast of a cigar.

The Novillo is certainly an indulgent more-ish cigar. Hand-rolled with Nicaraguan and Honduran leaf filler, with an Ecuadorian wrapper, the flavour is moderately light, but the nicotine buzz is heavy. They are is exactly how one would expect a cigar to taste- nothing fancy, no gimmicks, just good plain ol' tobacco. In fact, many cigar experts are now saying the best cigars are coming out of Nicaragua, not Cuba. Why? Climate change? Socialism? Pink jungle hedgehogs? I'm not sure, but there are some very nice cigars coming out of Nicaragua, and they can be quite inexpensive for the quality.
I definitely recommend these for the seasoned smoker, or for someone new. They would also make a great gift, for they appear to be far more expensive than they actually are. In the UK, they'll cost about £3.50 for one, and likely less on the continent.
  • Smoking time: 30-45 minutes
  • Flavour: 5/10
  • Smoke Sweetness: 3/10
  • Tar (1=very wet, 10=very dry): 8/10
  • Value for Money: 9/10
  • Indulgence Factor: 7/10
  • Overall Rating: 7/10

  1. Couldn't agree more with your review of these cigars. I bought myself a box of the Torpedo version and I must say there is nothing more satisfying than chomping down on one of these beauties. The whole sensory experience, the big gauge, the honest flavours just makes you smile. And a relatively short smoking time has it's advantages, the flavour can linger a little too long in the mouth. 7/10 is spot on.

  2. Following your advice, a friend and I tried the torpedo version of this from the tobacconist in Durham. We were mightily impressed, although mine did start to unravel towards the end- not that this was really a problem, it was well- constructed enough to still smoke well.
There is a tobacconist in the Grainger market in Newcastle, which sells cigars very cheaply, but I'm not sure how well they're stored. Had an awful Cameroonian corona from there the other day. Cost the same as the Novillo did (£3.50ish) and had the dates 1968 and 1998 on the wrapper, plus the letters CAO. Terribly constructed (there was a hole down the middle, making it very difficult to smoke properly) and it tasted awful. Not a bargain at all. Just thought I'd warn you!
Thanks for the tip about the Novillos though, very good, plus a lot of people commented on them, impressed!

  3. Bought 1 and ordered 4 more, fantastic the cigar unlit has a honey like aroma and the first two thirds have a cinnamon and pepper flavour and the cigar burns hotter than most, fantastic on a chilly day would give this cigar 9.7 out of 10.
